Story:  Today, I did a re-read of Sun Bread by Elisa Kleven.  This is the story of a baker who bakes a large sun shaped bread to help cheer everyone out of their winter weather grumbling.  This book is written in poetry form, so I could leave off the last word and see if the children could guess the rhyme.

Large Group:  The children did gross motor activities using lines of tape on the floor.  We walked on the lines and between the lines.  We jumped, hopped, and stretched to see how many lines we could straddle.

Letter Learning:  We completed the alphabet yesterday, so the next two days will be a quick review until we start all over again next week.

Snacks:  The morning class had Nutrigrain bars brought by Isaac.  The afternoon class had Teddy Grahams and juice brought by Emmy.   Thank you, Isaac and Emmy!

Group Meeting:  The children were amazed at how quickly their wheat is growing.  The sun definitely helped over the weekend.

Small Groups:  The activities for this week are listed below as well as the schedule for today.
Activity #1 (Red Group)  Working in groups, the children were given cards that looked like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  The jelly side had letters printed on them.  The peanut butter side had pictures printed on them.  The children worked together to match the beginning sound of the picture to the letter.
Activity #2  (Yellow Group)  The children were introduced to Geo boards.  Geo boards have pegs on which rubber bands can be fastened to make designs and shapes.
Activity #3 (Green Group)  The children played a game in which they were trying to make a sandwich.  They had to roll a dice that had 5 colored sides on it; two brown sides to represent bread, one red to represent tomato, one green to represent pickles, one pink to represent lunch meet, and one yellow to represent cheese.  To make a sandwich, they had to roll a brown side first for bread.  Then they could add the pieces as they were rolled.  The first person to get a whole sandwich was the winner.

Story:  The story that I choose for today was Peanut Butter and Cupcake by Terry Border.  Peanut Butter is new to the neighborhood and is trying to make a friend.  He meets Hamburger, Cupcake, Soup, Egg and French Fries, but none of them seem just right.  Then, he meets Jelly.  Ask your child to tell you what game they like to play best.

Large Group:  In the morning class, Isaac brought in Pretzel bread for us to try.  In the afternoon, Luke brought in Rice Bread.  They children enjoyed trying these new breads.  We made a list of words to describe the taste and textures of the breads.  Thank you, Isaac and Luke!

Story:  The book we read today was Bread Comes to Life by George Levenson.  This is a non-fiction book about bread from wheat seeds to a finished loaf.  The photos in this book are wonderful.  We could see how our wheat seeds are going to grow roots and stems.  The recipe used in the book is very similar to what we used when we made bread.  One ingredient was different.  The book recipe used honey.  We used something else sweet.  Ask your child to tell you what was different.

Large Group:  The children participated in relay races.  They ran, galloped, skipped, and hopped.

Group Meeting:  For our question today, I put a picture of a croissant on the board.  The children were asked, "Is this bread?"  We discussed that it was different from typical white bread, but that most of the ingredients were the same.

Small Groups:  The activities for this week are listed in yesterday's post.  The schedule for today was:
Activity #1 Yellow Group
Activity #2 Green Group
Activity #3 Red Group

Story:  The story for today was The Fox and the Crow retold by Manasi Subramaniam.  This is a version of one of Aesop fables.  A fable is a story that teaches a lesson.   In this story, a crow has stolen a loaf of bread from a window sill.  He sits up in a tree ready to eat it.  A fox sees the bread and wants it for himself.  To get the bread, the fox howls a song.  The crow wants to mimic the fox to show off his pretty voice.  When he opens his mouth, the bread falls out.  The fox quickly grabs the bread and walks away.   We held a little discussion about the moral of the story.  We mostly talked about making good decisions for yourself instead of copying someone else.

Large Group:  The children helped me make play dough out of a loaf of bread mixed with white glue.  This is done by removing the crust from the bread, tearing it into little pieces, and squishing it together with a little white glue.  We will use this at the art table to make creations that can be taken home.

Letter Learning:  The letter for today was Vv.

Snacks:  The morning snack person was Brooke R.  She brought Texas Roadhouse rolls, cinnamon butter, and juice.  The afternoon snack person was Callie.  She brought crackers, cheese, and juice.  Thank you, Brooke and Callie!

Group Meeting:  The question for today was "Do you know how to plant wheat?"  As part of our bread study, the children will be planting wheat seeds.   This will be one of the small groups for this week.  We will be learning about some of the ingredients in bread.

Small Groups:  The activities for this week and schedule for today are listed below.
Activity #1 (Red Group)  The children played a memory game with some of the books that I have read throughout the year.  We reviewed the titles, authors, and story lines.
Activity #2 (Yellow Group)  The children planted wheat seeds.  They scooped dirt into small cups, sprinkled wheat seeds that had been soaking in water for 24 hours, and covered them lightly.  We will put them in a warm place to germinate.
Activity #3 (Green Group)  The children experimented with growing yeast.  The teacher put water and sugar into two small water bottles.  She added yeast to one bottle.  Then, balloons were put over the mouths of the bottles.  The children observed and recorded the results on paper.

Story:  Last week, we began the story Everybody Bakes Bread by Norah Dooley.   Carrie is visiting her neighbors to see if anyone has a three handled rolling pin.  She notices that at every house, someone is baking a type of bread.  Ask your child to tell you if she finds the three handled rolling pin.

Large Group:  The children learned how to knead bread dough by practicing on play dough.  We rolled the play dough into  a ball, pressed down with the heels of our hands and folded the dough.  We repeated this to mix the ingredients together.

Letter Learning:  The letter for today was Uu.

Snacks:  The snack person for the morning class was Benjamin.  He brought Goldfish, cheese sticks, and juice.  The snack person for the afternoon was Brody.  He brought bagels, cream cheese, and juice.  Thank you, Benjamin and Brody!

Group Meeting:  The question for today was "Do you like toast?"  The children told me how to make toast and what they liked to put on toast.  Butter and jelly were the favorites, but peanut butter and cinnamon sugar were also mentioned.

Small Groups:  Instead of small groups, we watched two short videos about bread around the world.  There are so many different kinds of bread.  I hope we get to try a few of them during our study.

Story:  The story for today was Everybody Bakes Bread by Norah Dooley.  Because this book is rather long, we read half of the story today.  Carrie is baking bread with her mother and little brother.  When her brother starts to bother her, mom sends Carrie on an errand to see if any of her neighbors have a three handled rolling pin.  As Carrie visits her neighbors, she discovers that they are all making some kind of bread; coconut bread, flat bread, corn bread, and pocket bread.  Will Carrie find the three handled rolling pin?  We'll read the rest on Monday to find out!

Large Group:  The Yellow Group brought show and tell items to share.

Letter Learning:  The letter for today was Tt.

Group Meeting:  Our question for today was " Do you know how to make bread?"  Most of the children answered no.  So, we decided to make bread.

Small Groups:  Instead of small groups, the children gathered around my bread machine.  I told them how bread is typically made, and explained that the bread machine could do all of those things as well.  I showed them the ingredients and put them in the pan.  The bread machine has a little window at the top so the children could see the paddle spinning around and mixing the dough.  By the end of the class, the bread was ready for us to eat.  Everyone enjoyed a little bite.

Story:  The story today was "Sun Bread" by Elisa Kleven.  In this story, the weather is cold and snowy.  Everyone has to stay inside.  The baker decides to make a sun bread to help cheer everyone.  When the sun bread comes out of the oven, everyone has a bite.  It is so good that the sun comes out and wants a bite as well.  The baker promises to make sun bread every day so that the sun will always shine.

Large Group:  We listened to the song "Sammy" by Hap Palmer.  Sammy's father has asked him to go to the store to by bread.  Sammy doesn't want to walk, he wants to pretend that he is an animal.  So he pretends to fly like a bird, swim like a fish, crawl like a bug, and hop like bunny.  As we listened to the song, we acted like the animals, too.

Letter Learning:  The letter for today was Ss.

Snacks:  The morning class snack person was Tula.  She brought Kix cereal, strawberries, and milk.  The afternoon snack person was Shelby.  She brought Pops cereal and milk.  Thank you, Tula and Shelby!

Bread Study

Group Meeting:  Last week, we did a little exploring on the subject of bread, and we have decided to do a study of bread.  A note is in your child's backpack today explaining what we will be doing as we learn about bread.  If you have any questions about this study, please let me know.  I will be posting the things that we do and will be trying to take a few pictures as well.

Small Groups:  Because of the shortened week, we will not be breaking into small groups, but will be using this time to explore our study topic.  Today, we made a list of everything that we know about bread.  Tomorrow, we will make a list of things that we would like to know about bread.

Story:  The story for today was Marisol McDonald Does Not Match by Monica Brown.  Nothing about Marisol McDonald matches.  Her name, her clothes, her skin and hair.  However, Marisol likes being different.  She likes to dress in polka dots and stripes.  She likes to play pirate and soccer at the same time.  One day, she decides to match.  She dresses in one color and plays the same games that everyone else wants to play.  Ask your child to tell you if that makes her happy.  At the end of the story, Marisol gets a puppy and gives it an unusual name.  Can your child remember the name?

Large Group:  In the morning, the children played with Stomp Boards.  The Stomp Boards are levers that you lay on the floor.  After putting a bean bag on one end, they stomp on the board to propel the beanbag into the air.  In the afternoon, the Red Group had show and tell items that we missed last week due to early out.  I think we are all caught up now.  No more snowy weather please!

Letter Learning:  The letter for today was Rr.

Snacks:  The morning class snack person was Spencer.  He brought cheese, crackers, and juice.  In the afternoon, the children made Snowman faces which was the Birthday Day snack from last week.
