Group Meeting: During our group meeting today, I introduced the children to word cards that I have placed on the writing table. The word cards for September have school words printed on them such as crayons, paper, bus, backpack, etc. The children were told that they could copy the words onto paper if they choose. In October, the word cards will have fall words printed on them.
Small Groups: The small group activities for this week are:
Activity #1 (Red Group) The children will use the magnetic letters to spell their name. I have placed name cards on the table for them to copy, if needed.
Activity #2 (Yellow Group) The children will copy and create patterns using colored chips.
Activity #3 (Green Group) The children will explore the wooden puzzles that we have in our Puzzle Area.
Story: The story for today was I Am A Leaf by Jean Marzollo. In this book, a leaf explains how they grow, what they do, and what happens to leaves in the fall. What I like about this book is that while is uses simple sentences and phrases to explain a leaf's life cycle, it also uses big words like chlorophyll and soil. Ask your child to tell you the job of a leaf.
After the story, we went outside to see if any of our tree leaves are starting to change. We will keep checking for signs of fall.
Large Group: Today, we began Letter Learning. The children learned about the letter J. They learned how to make it, what sound it represents, and what it looks like in print. To practice making the letter, we used our Wet, Dry, Try chalkboards. The letter J was already printed on the chalkboard with chalk. The children use a wet sponge to trace and erase the letter. After drying the board, they use chalk to try to print the letter. I heard many children ask, "Can we do it again?"
Snacks: The morning snack helper was Jay. He brought Goldfish, grapes, and juice. The afternoon helper was Grace O. We had granola bars and juice. Thank you!
